Hope you get a quick resolution to your problem! if you don’t get anywhere, be sure to record the events with your phone and then also call VW Customer Care

Hi all,

I am having the same issue with no hope in sight, my dealership has had 11 Altas's waiting for over two month. We all need to come together and file a report with the US highway department. Filing a report will help force a recall. I have added the link for you. Report a Safety Problem | NHTSA
I filled mine yesterday. I also contacted VW Customer Care. I am having a Regional Manager contact me on Monday 3/21/22. I stated I want buy out information as I meet the 30 day lemon law on Sunday. I luckily got a loaner but doesn't fit our family of 5, this Atlas was our main family car.
I called my dealership yesterday to get an update. The last note on my care was ZERO parts in in the US and Critical back order :(

Don't have any hopes of the regional VW manager doing anything at all besides read you a script and tell you they don't know when they will have any parts. My cross sport was magically fixed within an hour of the Associated Press journalist calling the dealership when I initiated the story about this problem.....https://apnews.com/article/technology-travel-business-lawrence-kansas-8979f0921a7af4afe568ccf02a6fe41a

Looks like there is now a pending recall

Fretting corrosion is the name for a buildup of insulating, oxidized wear debris that can form when there is small amplitude fretting motion between electrical contacts. The oxidized wear debris can pile up enough at the electrical contact spots that the electrical resistance across the connection increases a lot.

Here's an additional article about the wire harness defect recall:

All - I wish I could say something different but same boat here. Random windows rolling down and finally an airbag error light. Since the airbag warning light is on, they did set me up in a rental, but its not my car. Brought 2021.5 Atlas SEL 2.0T AWD in on Feb 5th. No end in sight. Tech told me he wouldn't be surprised if this is ends up being a recall. Glad to see it show up today, but note the articles all state "VW says a fix is currently under development, but that won't stop the automaker from notifying affected customers with mailers that are expected to be sent out on May 10. A followup mailer will alert customers once a fix has been developed." Doesn't do us any good at the moment. The problem is, I like my car. I don't want to do a buy back, I just want them to fix it and give a reasonable estimate on when that will be. VW needs to do something about this. I didn't pay $45k for a car to have it sit in a lot.

I talked to the tech that worked on my car. He stated the wiring harness is a couple millimeters too short and this is stressing the harness and the connection to the door control module. Right on the paperwork indicates the fault code stored that created the check engine light and that he performed the "wiggle" test and it failed. I dont know what a wiggle test is but I kinda laughed when I read it.

I just today 3/19/22 joined because we are having this issue with our 2021 Volkswagen Atlas SE W/Tech package . It started in November 2021 we bought it in June and because of that we have put very little mileage on it since November because we never know when this issue is going to act up... I think in the last 9-10 months we have put 4000 miles on it because we just dont trust it anymore...The part has been on "order" since November supposedly but every time we go in the just blow us off and say..sorry we cant get it...but offer little else...I figured they would have at least offered to give us a reliable loaner till they could fix it but nope...So it mostly sits in the driveway... Wife picked it out of 3 SUV she liked (4Runner(she likes the looks hates its MPG), the Kia Telluride(they didnt have the model we wanted they only had the totally loaded or base models) , and the Atlas..she ended up with the Atlas because of its looks and the MPG combined and they had one in a color she loved (the Dark Gray)

When i was looking around yesterday I found the recall was issued or is about to be ( VW Atlas SUV Family Recalled Over Airbag Woes, Unexpected Braking ) so maybe this will get them on it or at least give people remedy...but what im wondering is ..if they dont have the part and they issue a recall how long can they keep blowing people off by just saying..yeah sorry we dont have the part just keep driving your unsafe vehicle????? anyone know how that works? when a vehicle is actually unsafe(with the E-Brake coming on randomly even at low speeds) and the air bag possibly not working...?? how long can they just keep blowing us off?? never had a recall like this before...the couple ive been part of were things like...check the cars brakes for premature wear(it had the wear and they replaces them on a Ford Freestyle back in the day) but for something more major and involved like this that they keep chirping out sorry we dont have the part...how long can they keep you waiting not able to drive but PAYING on a vehicle you really cant use reliably????

Hi did this issue get resolved? I just brought my 2021 Atlas SEL in to dealership and was told that it needed new wiring harness. They said it could be months before I get my vehicle back due to the supply shortage. The dealership has dozens of other vehicles already just sitting in their lot.
I am having the exact same problem with my 2020 Atlas SE that has only 5k on the odometer. You are not alone with this issue as the service department at my dealership informs me that they have several other vehicles currently waiting for a replacement part and have repaired several others with the same problem. They inform me that the cause is a faulty wiring harness from engine compartment to the driver’s door. Unfortunately, I fear that your issue will get worse before it gets better. Mine started out as an intermittent problem then became more frequent until it was happening all the time. I took a video of the alerts popping up on the dash to show the service department. My Atlas has now been at the dealership since Feb 23rd with no end in sight due to a nationwide lack of the specific part. I spoke with the service manager and she suggested I call VW Customer Care to try to light a fire into the situation. They are assigning me an advocate. I have been given a new Tiguan to drive but that is not the car that I leased and am currently paying for. I am hoping that VW will make this right and if I don’t have my car back repaired in the near future, that they swap out my leased Atlas for a new one. I am also going to make an official report complaint on the NHTSA website.

Our 2021 Atlas SEL started having issues within the past month. The dealership gave us a loaner vehicle but said it will be months before they have a part. I started looking at purchasing a new vehicle too but it’s equally as difficult to find.

Finally picked up my Atlas after 85 days of driving a Passat while it sat at the dealership. Miraculously my harness came in just 3 business days before VW had to respond to my buyback request. Glad to have it back. Fingers crossed I have no more issues. Have a call from my customer care regional case supervisor on Tuesday to discuss compensation due to loss of use.

Please let us know how that conversation goes with the case supervisor. Also wonder if anyone else has had luck with the buyback pressure to get part quicker??

I'm in the same situation as most everyone who's posted. I've had my 2021 Atlas, with 10K miles, at the dealership for over 8 weeks now with no clarification or info on when the fix will be available. I finally opened a case with VW Customer care after just seeing the national news stories on this issue. Hoping the more VW corporate hears about it, the more motivation they may have to resolve, or at the very least, make things easier for people who are stuck waiting.

Does anyone have further information around the following:
1. If we have to continue to wait, are there any terms in the warranty stating we should receive a comparable loaner vehicle? As of now, we're stuck driving a compact SUV loaner because "nothing else is available". With the Atlas being MIA, and it being our primary family vehicle with several kids, we need the space!
2. Has anyone gone as far as seeking legal counsel regarding options from a customer/consumer perspective? Seems ridiculous that VW can get away with this for so long, with no accountability, sense of urgency, or desire to make things right.

I was told by customer care the dealership and our warranty has no requirement that they provide us with a loaner in general and that it’s a courtesy at the discretion of the dealer. I asked each week for a different vehicle and had a Passat as my loaner the entire 85 days I was without my Atlas. I reached out to my lawyer who told me the only action under consumer law I could take was lemon due to the time spent out of service so I began the process and miraculously my part came in and was replaced 3 days before they were required to give me a decision on replacement or buyback. I’m sure if we found one a class action attorney would be willing to take on VW. I agree what they’re doing is extremely wrong. It also worries me that VW is publicly stating there is no known fix so that ultimately means that even though they “fixed” mine and so many others issues it still is at risk of reoccurring and having more serious future issues like airbags deploying improperly as stated in the article. In my opinion with no known remedy VW should be forced to buyback any Atlas listed as part of the recall.

I too recently had my Atlas waiting for a new harness. Well the harness was installed today and no it is not a fix. It’s the same design and fit as the malfunctioning harness. There is no current fix and this is considered a band aid or ticking time bomb as I see it. So I was sent on my way told I can drive my Atlas (I will not), as this doesn’t satisfy the recall and a new harness has not been designed yet. Anyone initiating a buy back, keep it going. I am working with the partner we purchased the vehicle from to buyback the vehicle in exchange for a different brand. It’s absolutely ridiculous my vehicle sat for months and I had no loaner or rental. Now the fix is literally not a fix, just a way for them to buy time. In no way shape or form is it safe to drive. What a complete mess and the VW customer service is atrocious. I called corporate to verify that the installation of the new harness was indeed not the fix and these people have no clue. Thank you to the dealership for being transparent, as corporate is still as sleazy as their defeat device. No more VW for us or anyone I work with. I work in the industry and this is a colossal blunder and misstep for VW . Keep up the good fight and get your Atlas bought back! Don’t let VW work you over with their tactics. No follow up calls and a whole bunch of BS.

I would love to know... Legally, what happens if this issue were to cause a wreck and/or injury to someone? If VW knows about this, wouldn't they be liable? With this appearing to be the makings of a massive lawsuit, why isn't VW acting with more urgency?

Well that makes me nervous as the Regional Case Manger said my part should be in some time in April. I have filed my paperwork for a buy back last week after waiting 4 weeks as my car was in the shop.
Again makes me nervous as you stated there is no current fix as well as the recall states that too

I had inside knowledge over 30 days ago from the service manager (I work in the industry), that there was no fix, that they were still in development of a new product. I mentioned this to my regional case worker and she denied to respond. I then directly confronted her and said “ was I not supposed to know that, its inside knowledge?” She went dead silent with no response. Completely attempted to change the subject. I have had three regional case managers, not a one you can trust. No call backs. Even was finally denied for a loner or rental, but not by a call like she said. I was sent an email at 7pm, with its not in your warranty for a loaner. I trust no one there. You will get a run around and no direct answers. They couldn’t answer if the vehicle becomes no longer covered under the warranty, and if this malfunction were to occur again, would they still cover the repair cost due to the prior issue. They cannot answer that question. I have zero faith in VW period. This was as of today!
