I leased a 2021 VW Atlas on 5/31/2021. Beginning in about December 2021, the vehicle began showing the following erratic and intermittent issues: The driver side windows going up and down on their own, these flashing messages/ beeping “Error: Driver Door Contact Switch”, “Attention:Engine is Running”, “Fault Electronic Brake”, and the Emergency Brake automatically engaging itself while driving. On 2/7/2022, these issues happened 3 times over the span of 25 minutes, including coming to a screeching halt via emergency brake engagement while traveling approximately 40mph. A car behind me quickly hit his brakes but made a point to come next to my vehicle to tell me that he was inches away from wrecking the back of my vehicle. I needed to turn my hazards on, place the car in park, turn the car off and on, on a busy Route 130, before being able to move a few hundred yards for it to happen twice more. I called VW Cherry Hill NJ on 2/8/2022 and advised them that my car is unable to be driven due to safety concerns. Since I was less than a mile away, I drove my vehicle to the dealership as a drop off. I returned at 830 AM on 2/8/2022 and spoke with a Service Advisor who quickly told me, after I described the issues and showed pictures and video of the error messages, that this is a “well-known problem” and that it is a Recall for a “Driver Wiring Harness”. He further advised that the part is on back order and has been for several months, while further explaining that there are 7 vehicles in the back waiting for the part. I asked about assistance with a loaner since my car was understandably unsafe to drive, but was advised that there were no available loaners. I was advised that other vehicle owners with this issue have opted to continue operating their vehicles despite the safety issues as they were unable to obtain a loaner. I was then directed to my purchase dealer, VW Salem, where I spoke with the service manager Ed (whom was very polite and responsive) however, was met with the same results- no parts in sight and no loaners available. I also contacted Prestige VW Turnersvile- again with the same response. I left my vehicle parked at VW Cherry Hill and got a ride from a coworker to work. I contacted VW customer care where I was told that my case would be escalated and I would hear a response within 4 business days (the following Monday). I now await a response from VW Corporate Care regarding an ETA for repair parts and a loaner vehicle. I have searched and see no recall for this vehicle on any databases. This is clearly a well-known issue to VW as there appear to be hundreds of complaints nationwide online from what I have read and acknowledgment from 3 VW service centers in South Jersey alone.
I will await VW corporates response, however, I plan to contact NJ Lemon Law in addition to request a buy back option and settlement from VW.
