Stalling Issues

Purchased the 2022 Atlas Cross Sport in April. 2-3 weeks after I purchased, the vehicle would randomly stall when pulling into a parking spot or even a couple times at a stop light. The RPMs would just drop and the vehicle then sputters and dies. Dealership first told me me nothing is showing up on the computer so nothing they can do. So I started keeping track of the exact time and day. Took it back to the dealership again and they said they would have to keep my vehicle to duplicate the problem before it can be diagnosed. Problem is that could be weeks of someone just driving my vehicle around trying to get it to do it again and they tell me that don't have any loaner vehicles. It's my only vehicle so not really an option. Next closest dealership out of state is also telling me that don't have any loaners. Anyone else having the stalling issues or suggestions?

Hmmmm...sounds like it could a potiential issue with the Auto-Start/Stop System - have you tried disabling that system to see if the issue persists?
Does the engine cut off entirely to where you have to restart the engine itself? or will it fire back up the moment you let off the brake, turn the wheel, press on the accelerator, etc? If it's starting back up itself, then it sounds like it's just the auto-start/stop system engaging. This will be indicated by the "A' inside a circle icon on the dashboard that auto-stop is engaged. Which will cut most power to the engine to save fuel while idling.

Unfortunately the VW warranty doesn't gauarntee you a loaner...that's on a dealer by dealer basis. I suggest reaching out to VW Customer Care and looking into renting a car and getting reumbursed.

A bit more detail would help - what happens if you turn off the auto stop/start? Do you have to manually start it up again after it shuts off?
I've been disabling the auto stop/start recently and maybe it does it less frequently?? Its just so random, it's hard to say. But yes, I have to restart the engine completely.

This very thing happens to me constantly. It’s been in the shop numerous times first i drove around with it this way because as the same as you there were no loaners - i called VW headquarters they were useless. Finally after a month of service twice. It happened to the guy driving it. Basically they told me get another car.. such a waste mine is a 2022 atlas as well. It stalls on me constantly and it’s so frightening because I’m always in the car with my kids. It almost on three occasions caused pileup getting on the verazzano bridge. Sad VW doesn’t care about the safety of its drivers and passengers
Mine does the same thing. After more times taking it in they said VW "didn't like what the fuel injector pump" was reading so they replaced it. Mine still does it although less. It does it a lot when I'm reversing. I have to put it back in park and restart the car. Scary at times depending on where I am.

i posted back in 2019 on the stalling issue. I have a 2019 VW atlas and stalling issue continues to happen randomly and I consider this to be a safety issue. When I have to quickly accelerate in an emergency situation, can't have it stalling out. When I take it in for service, I have them document it in their system. I'm pretty sure this is tied to the computed code but until someone get seriously hurt of killed, VW will sit on their hands until caught. I suggest VW buyers keep posting these incidents and report same to the dealership for documentation to use in the future should something happen as a result of stalling. The attorney can then use this information to support an action against VW.

Wait a minute - reversing? Do the brakes apply and it stops your or just putzes out and dies?
My situation is even weirder: I have a 2021 Atlas. Mine has on numerous occasions, as I pull into my driveway and wait for the garage door to go up, turned off like it usually does with the auto stop feature to save fuel, but a few seconds later when the door is up and I step on the gas to pull into the garage, the engine is just completely off, even though I’m in drive. I have to shift i to park and restart the car to move forward!
Only ever has happened in my driveway, so I’m thinking am I crazy or does the dang car just know that it’s home?? 🤣 Thankfully has never happened to me on the road or I’d be much more concerned.

Yes it does it more when in reverse it seems.

One time I was pulling into a parking garage, pushed the garage button for a ticket and went to drive forward and realized the car had died. I had no idea as usually it would sputter and then die. This time is was just quiet enough that I didn't realize it. Had to put it in park and restart 😒.

ok...quite a different thing here. This is not the same as "stalling", it's just the vehicles "manuever braking" that senses something is behind you (even when it's not) and doing what it is suppposed to...applying the brakes.

Search this group for "manuever braking" - I have posted a bunch about it/how to turn it off. I hated it b/c it would activate if I backed out of my driveway too fast b/c it "saw" the road coming up based on the angle of my driveway.

One challenge of online help like this is - it's challenging to get a very accurate description of the issue so still of course not sure exactly what is going on with yoru Atlas but could be as simple as I have stated above.

Good luck, it's possibly a simple fix.

Even if it's stalls going forward like pulling into a parking spot? The rpms drop and the engine struggles to stay running then dies whether in reverse or in drive.

No, that is not teh same thing. I have no idea what is wrong with your Atlas. My best guess is battery combined with the auto stop/start system.

just dies. like maybe I brake and then it's like the engine cuts but it makes me restart it.

This is what mines does when it dies. Never any sputtering, so you just think it went into autostop mode until you hit the gas 😬

it took us a long time to figure out if your seatbelt is off the engine stop/start disables and the car will die.
Just stumbled across this thread and share y'alls frustration. Some thoughts to maybe help diagnose: My wife complained for years now that our 2019 Atlas would hesitate and take time to engage to the point where she has heard people behind her screech on the brakes and honk. Usually happened while accelerating from a stop but she claimed it also happened when she tried to increase speed on the highway. Never happened to me in three years of driving it. I finally checked and no codes. Brought into the dealership and they drove it for 50 miles and did a "complete diagnosis" but could find nothing wrong. We have also experienced the common power steering whine when turning. We love the Atlas but wife was afraid to drive it so traded it in as perhaps ours had a phantom bug (bought used). We also test drove a new Atlas - and I finally saw / experienced what she had been talking about: pulled out of a gas station and turned left (20 mph?) when the car seemed to coast and wife started pumping on the throttle to get it to move again, which it did after a second or two. Dealer rep in passenger seat said "huh, what was that". Wife beamed as she proved she was not imaging things;) Ended up getting a new Atlas CS - no power steering noises and no hesitation after wife test drove for about 80 miles. Plus much more fun to drive, improved electronics, interior, etc. BTW - new Atlas and CS both had no PS noise so that seemed to have been a real issue despite VW mechanics saying that is normal. But - after purchasing the new CS we left the dealership lot and the wife turned right when I felt a slight hesitation. I looked over and I asked "was that what I think it was??" She said not a word but looked guilty as ****;) I drove it the rest of the day for over 100 miles on all kinds of road conditions (day, night, thunderstorms, highway, urban, residential) and had no issues. Wife is 5'4" fully stretched so the only thing I can think of is maybe her short stature/driving position/habits may have something to do with only she experiencing this?

Tamara,
I have the same issue. I posted a new thread that includes a video I made about engine stalling.
did you find out what's wrong with the car?
