Same issue with ours that started at the 6-month maintenance plus software update (November 2018). Remote start stopped working after that. Check engine light came on. Dealer said we need to replace fuel injector. Check engine light was off for about a week or so then turned back on again. After driving a few days with it on, it turned off as we were driving to the dealer. Go figure! Anyway, happened again. Check engine light would turn on and off ao we brought it back in. Now they’re telling us we need to replace the catalytic converter that isnon backorder for a month! We have a 2018 SEL R-Line with less than 7k miles. Our suspicion from the very beginning of all these issues is that the software update messed it up. Our Atlas was perfectly fine before we brought it to for maintenance.

Catalyc converter

I had my engine light come on and when bringing it in to dealer they also diagnosed it to be the catalytic converter. ETA for parts is 4-6 weeks. This is not my first issue. A month ago I had the water pump replaced after noticing the engine coolant was a little below the add line. Anybody else have their water pump replaced?
Hi there, I am having the same issues, just came back from Maple dealer, been toll that i need a new catalytic converter, the car is 10 months old, a lot od issues and recalls with this vehicle, been told that it will take 2 to 4 weeks to get the part.

I got check engine light on today. When checked the code, it's P0420 for bad Catalytic converter. I have almost 18 months and 8700 miles with the car. The catalytic converter for my Honda Pilot went bad after 7 years and 110,000 miles, but 8700 miles and 18 months does not make sense. I have been pretty big admirer of Atlas since I bought it, because I enjoyed driving it and loved this car for not having any problems, but looks like every honeymoon ends some day and mine ended today. I had no problem so far and was recommending it to people as a good car, but engine light on today changed it altogether. I guess sooner or later every Atlas owner is going have some kind of problem and it's a fact that this car is not built good. I am calling dealer tomorrow for an appointment and looks like my nightmare started today. I lost confidence in the brand and won't buy any Volkswagen car in future.

Such a shame that during a time VW could have improve their build quality, underdogs like Kia and Hyundai have stepped up. Stepped up so much they're some of the most reliable and dependable vehicles on the market. Who would've thought? Won't be surprised if some people here also own a Korean product.

Here is something interesting happened. The CEL was on for 5 days for P0420 (bad Catalytic converter), and then it turned off by itself on last Friday. It's been off for last 3 days, so cancelled dealer appointment. My rear right tire was also loosing air during those 5 days when it was on, and I ended up replacing the tire because nail was on side wall. The day tire was replaced, I got TPMS light turned on because I was suing the spare donut, which I reset in car menu after new tire got installed. It was one day after new tire was installed that CEL for p0420 turned off by itself. I asked the dealer service representative if there is any relationship between these, but as expected, the flat tire can not cause P0420 (bad Catalytic converter) CEL, so not sure why I had it for 5 days and then not on in last 3 days. I drove 70-80 miles in last 3 days to see if I get it back on, but nothing yet. Has anyone has similar experience with CEL.

. . . Has anyone has similar experience with CEL.
Yep. While driving home the CEL came on and I pulled over and checked the manual and it said to drive the car to the nearest dealer. Was only 6 miles from home and over 45 miles to the dealership so I opted to drive it home. Called and they advised me to have it towed in, (Which I did.), and while I waited for a tow I checked the engine with a code reader and got the now infamous P0420 code. Each time I started the car the CEL came on, and when the tow truck driver, (Actually a truck with a flat bed trailer showed up.), as I was driving the car onto the trailer the light went out.

After having the problem diagnosed at the dealership, they had us pick the car up and drive it since it was going to take about a month to get the new catalytic converters in. After about 700 miles the CEL came back on again and since we were close to the dealership we took it in and luckily they had the replacement cats in stock and were able to fix it over the next few days.

Everything was fine for a few more weeks till the light came back on again, but this time it flashed about three times, went back off and was diagnosed as a whole different situation . . . and a lot worse then the previous problem. (But that's a topic we can save for a later time!)

Let us know when the light comes back on and you finally have to have the cats replaced!! :wink2:

I had CEL off for 3 months (2000 miles) and it turned back on on 06/13 for same P0420 (catalyst system efficiency below threshold bank1). I called VW dealer and setup appointment. In the meantime I filled up 5 gallons in the car thinking that it might effect the CEL, and it worked. the CEL turned off by itself today after staying on for 2 days (30 miles). Now the CEL is off, but I don't understand if there is a problem with Catalytic converter, why light has turned on and off twice in last 3 months. I was under the impression that once CEL turns on, it will stay on unless you clear the code and reset it, but with Atlas it turned on twice by itself for P0420 and turned off twice without resetting it. I am not sure if I take it to the dealer now because it's off now. Any advise.

Ok - so does anyone actually have more info on this related to the cats? All these cats are not physically going bad, it's got to be related to the software update and the O2 sensors. Has anyone with some "car sense" actually had a convo with the dealer service folks to find out what the root cause of the CEL related to the cats is? Cat's typically last the life the vehicle or at least well into the 100K mile range before becoming plugged etc. requiring replacement. VW clearly knows why this issue is happening and yes, the service folks say "bad cat...replace" but let's dig into this a little deeper.

Same P0402 Code

We too have been having the P0420 code; car seems to hesitate when accelerating from a stop. Car is currently in with the dealer. Will post what we are told.

Dealer drove the car said it drove fine. They called VW and VW wanted them to clear the code and send the car home. Dealer said if the code reappears they will need to replace Cats. Well 1 day later the code reappeared. And now I need to schedule another appointment with the dealer. 2018 Atlas with 32k miles. How can cats go bad that fast? I have a 2006 F150 with 316k miles and original cats.

Well not even a week later check engine light came back on and OBDII reader says P0420. Back to the dealer which they say are bad cats. I am no mechanic but a bad check usually occurs when they become fouled with too much fuel, usually because valves are not seated properly and allowing unburned fuel from being passed.

Anyone else having this same issue. Would love to hear your experience and what mommy VW says/does.

Got the car back a day later than expected. They replaced the catalytic converters and mentioned this is a very common issue and they replaced several of them recently. When asked what could cause Cats to go bad they said the initial design of the cats was defective and the new design will fix the issue. They also had to replace the intake manifold because the tech broke something on it while they were taking the exhaust components off.

I believe this is more software related than hardware meaning that error is really just that - an error code b/c the cat efficiency isn't meeting whatever the ECU deems ok....not physically bad.

We are replacing our cats on 8 week old Atlas with 1400 miles! Problem is so pervasive in the Atlas that VW Corp. has a whole plan of action for when the CEL comes on: Step 1: Repair cat; if CEL comes on again, Step 2: replace cat.

Catalytic converter replacement

My Atlas is 16 months old and the check engine light came on, they said the Catalytic converter needs replacing, waiting for parts. The service advisor said this is a common problem, why doesn't VW fix this if it is that common.

Hello All,

First post here... Here is my story. No major issues my 2018 Atlas SEL Premium is now 18mo and 8k on it ... I see the pattern here with SW update, same thing aparently happend to my Atlas

1.Roughly after recall updates started on/off check engine light issue, randomly on or off. Took it to dealer, it was off, they were like come back when it on... I'm like really, how am I going to time that..
2.Started beeing ON more than OFF, in a matter of 1-2months (don't drive much). Dealer said we cleared it, if it comes back it will be Cat. replacement...
3.Sure enough as I did few miles light came back ON and its in Service currently.

What are next steps, did this resolve issue for anyone or everybody is still having some problems with the car - if that is the case, if it comes back after cat. replacement, I'm trading car for something else immediately...

Is this only on 2018 models or 2019 has same issues?

My cat was replaced 6 weeks ago (when car was 6 weeks old). CEL back on. Now dealer is saying it’s a faulty 02 sensor. Gas mileage has remained atrocious. Customer service has been abysmal through entire process. So disappointed. Anyone who had CEL and gas mileage issues get it “permanently” (for now) fixed? I just don’t have time or energy to keep taking car into dealership or to keep getting this awful gas mileage.

Can you be more precise with your mpgs? Do you have hand-calc'd tank data over long term? Also, please include your city/hwy split and any other info such as lots of idling etc. Bad O2 can cause mpgs to drop as it can cause a fuel-heave air/fuel ratio. Very easy fix, should be a drop off/pick up same day repair.
