I have a 2018 SEL Premium with 4 motion with about 95k Mike’s on it. Sometimes when coming to a stop at a red light or when maneuvering in a parking lot at slow speed, the engine RPMs get dragged down to where engine almost stalls or does stall. It feels like torque converter is not disengaging. This has been happening for quite some time but frequently in the last 10k miles. Any idea if this is a common issue? What could be the cause?

I also have a 2018 SEL-P but with fewer miles (54K). I haven't experienced that problem and don't recall reading of anyone else who has, so I don't believe it is a common issue. Slow speed stalling can have a number of causes.

I would start with reading the OBD codes. That might indicate if there is a torque converter problem or something else like a bad injector or failed sensor somewhere. I think a torque converter not unlocking would exhibit as a shudder when slowing down - much like forgetting to downshift with a manual transmission.

I just had the car at the dealership two days ago for this issue. They said it required an ECM update but didn’t even bother test driving the car. They did the update and there were no codes displayed. When I have checked the codes recently there have been none. The ECM update didn’t correct the issue. When the RPMs get dragged down, it does often shudder and either stalls out or returns to normal idle which is about 740 RPM. I’m going to take it to a different dealer as the one I’ve been going to is not good.

I’ll add that when it is normally idling, the engine is very smooth and doesn’t appear to have any sort of fuel delivery issue or injection issue.

Dealer time. An '18 should still be under warranty. Could be the start/stop system.

I agree that this could be related to start/stop system however I have tested the car in both modes (start stop active or deactivated) and I get the same result of near-stall or stall either way. Will be taking it to local, reputable shop to evaluate. Will post an update when I get a diagnosis.

And I’ll add that I would never take it to a VW dealership while not under warranty. They over-bill and I do t trust them at all.

Has the issue been resolved? I’ve been experiencing this exact same issue. Took it to the dealer and they said the injector in cylinder 4 failed. They replaced it under warranty and told me to come pick it up. Upon picking it up, it stalled again later that night. It has since killed on me 5 times in the past 3 days but only when coming to a slow stop (parking) or reverse. The dealer of course cannot replicate the issue and no new codes have popped up. I data logged it yesterday and found cylinder 1 misfiring quite a bit.

I had this twice with eventual error codes that led to the charcoal canister. Once under warranty and once out of warranty. At 40k miles each time. It's happening again but I'm not sure it's the canister this time. Still no error codes. I can't let my wife or kids drive this vehicle because it will randomly stall. It's like my 78 Ford ltd II when the catalytic converter got clogged. Also no error codes on that vehicle. It's currently failing fuel trim bank 1 tests on my code reader, but and there was an older code for a purge valve problem, but it wouldn't surprise me if replacing the vapor canister again would do the trick again. Until then, quick flip to neutral and restart like when I was in college driving a crappy Ford.

Just got error code P0496 with another stall today. That's the code I've had twice and new vapor canister fixed both times. The problem is that it sneaks up on you and car begins stalling before to first error code or check engine light. Also, I don't think these canisters are supposed to clog every 40k miles like clockwork, but I'm ordering my 3rd one now.

Hey all,

Wife's having the same problem with our '18. Just had both the evap pump (?) and n80 valve replaced. Had engine codes for the purge valve prior, they're gone now, but the problem still persists. Also the gas pump clicks off early (tanks only 1/2 - 3/4 full), not sure if related.

There any other parts of the system that could be the issue?
