I have the same issue. Android Auto and when playing music the text messages are very, very quiet.
One recommendation is when you are changing the volume using the steering wheel control, there appears at the very top of the info screen the bar to pull down and and adjust volumes. There is an option to change the volume for different inputs.
I adjusted it the other day and haven’t had a text while driving since.

Yup, tried that out today and it is disappointing. Let me know what you find out please.
