Bad Water pump on 2019 Atlas SEL - not covered under extended warranty

Like many in this forum, my water pump has gone bad. Of course, I’m just a couple months out of warranty. Then I read about the 8-year/80k mile warranty extension for this issue. Great (I thought).

Turns out, my VIN isn’t included in the vehicles covered. Not sure why not considering it’s so common for my year model. Plus, I’ve had issues with this in the past.

The dealership was almost $1300 to repair. Not happy and so they are trying to submit a goodwill repair request to VW corp. They said that even if they approve it, I’m on the hook for the $250 that the dealership gets charged by VW corp for that.

That doesn’t make much sense to me but will obviously take it over the full whack.

Curious if any other owners out there have had the same experience (water pump has died after standard warranty expired and extended warranty didn’t include their VIN).

If so, they you find out why?…get it covered somehow? Or did you end up paying? I’ve contacted my regional customer advocate manager to try and get them involved but wanted to reach out to others to see their experience/get any advice.

TIA!

That’s tough luck! Sorry to hear. Is this the 2.0L or the 3.6L? You should have tried a different dealership for a second opinion. Most decent dealerships will honor the warranty if it’s over by a small amount like that. They should also provide an answer (or again maybe another dealer) as to why your VIN specifically isn’t covered.

Unfortunately, there isn't another anywhere close by. And I'm not doubting the issue/repair, it's just the fact that it is a known issue and VW aren't proactively taking care of their customers. That said, VW did approve the goodwill repair, so that's something for now. Need to get it repaired and probably get out of it before more/worse issues crop up. As far as the why it isn't in scope for the extended warranty, someone else pointed me to the fact that only the 2.0t models and not the 3.6 v6 models were included. So, they are probably assuming that it is limited to the water pump on the 2.0t model, which I would assume would be different. That said, given the number of folks with the 3.6 v6 with the same issue, then what are the chances that a different part would also be faulty. Meaning, I think the different water pumps are probably malfunctioning perhaps because of another common part malfunctioning (e.g. thermostat). I'm just speculating at this point but what I do know is that VW corp have a bad history of doing the absolute minimum it has to when issues are reported. Dealerships don't do a great job either, probably because they are being screwed by VW...IDK?

Anyway, hope this thread/info helps someone else out.

Similar issue here, vr6 water pump failed at 83,500 miles. Coolant had been topped off at two different dealers at around 70k, low coolant light warning came on again last week with a leak noticeable at the water pump bolts. Had a dealer replace it, two pulleys and the drive belt for just under $2k! Hope to have VW goodwill contributing something towards this.

About three months ago, the AC compressor was replaced at another $2k, so out of warranty repairs are adding up. Hoping that's it now for at least a couple more years of use!
