Volkswagen was always going to release spin-offs based on the new Atlas and now we have a teaser sketch of what the second derivative of the Atlas could look like. An official reveal of the near-production five-seater should take place at the upcoming 2018 New York Auto Show.
Until the, we have this sketch of a two-row Atlas sporting what CarScoops thinks is a coupe-like profile. There are certainly hints of that in its sleeker roof-line and floating rear pillar. VW has also added a very large and prominent lower air intake that spans the width of the bumper, which also features integrated headlights.
Tying the five-seater to its larger sibling are the squared-off fender bulges framing the front and rear wheels. Both ends connected by by a line of pinched metal that goes through the door handles instead of around them.
Not much else is known aside from the MQB platform it’s based on. Maybe VW will hide a turbocharged 235hp 2.0-liter under its bonnet or we could see the same 276hp 3.6-liter V6 engine already found in the seven-seater. If it’s anything like the larger variant, all-wheel drive should be offered as will additional safety tech like automated emergency braking and lane-keeping assist.
We’ll find out more when the five-seat Atlas debuts next week in New York.
