2021 Atlas Brake Grinding at Start Up Only

I searched the forums, but couldn't find anything about this specific issue.

My 2021 Atlas R has been having a braking issue ever since I got it. I got it new in the middle of 2021, so have had it about 1-1/2 years, and have had this issue ever since.
When I start driving the vehicle after it has been sitting for a little while (anywhere between a couple hours to overnight), the first few times I use the brakes, it sounds and feels like the brakes. are grinding. There is a loud metallic grinding noise until I come to a full stop. This will last for several miles, and eventually go away. My concern is that the brakes are getting worn out way quicker than they should. I'm not heavy on the brakes, and only have 16k miles on the car, but like I said, this has been a problem since I got the car. The frustration is that when I bring it into the dealer, they "can't recreate the problem." I image they are jumping in the car as soon as I drop it off, after the brakes are no longer grinding.

Has anyone else had this problem and had it fixed? I don't know what to tell the mechanics when I drop it off because they tell me that the brakes look good. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Can anyone attest that they changed their break pads and it solved this issue? Any suggestions as to which pads someone used in the swap? I have a 2021.5. I get the grinding noise and an annoying squeak that lasts through out every driving session. VW dealer told me it was normal and my pads and rotors were fine. I've owned several cars and none of this sounds normal.
Any Ceramic pad. I use Centric Posi-Quiet. They aren't expensive. It's just related to pad compound is all. VW pads stop well but are dusty which is the.cause here when they get some moisture on them.

Centric Posi-Quiet pads are $55 on Rock Auto - a simple DIY you can do with a few basic tools. No reason to deal with the noise and time to have the dealer even look at this.

I have the same issue. Dealership claims it's "normal" which is unacceptable for a brand new vehicle. I just filed a complaint with the NHTSA to report the issue and hopefully they will have other reports and issue a recall or something. Here's the link if you want to do the same. The more complaints probably increases the likelihood of them taking it seriously - Report a Safety Problem | NHTSA

Mine is in the dealer for the same thing right now. Frustrating because they say there is nothing they can do....which is not right. I have people stop me and say you brakes sound really bad....Mine is 2022 with barely 20k miles.

Thanks for the suggestion but I am 5 thumbs under the hood. I am about to take to someone other than the dealer to have the pads replaced.

And that's ok too!
The issue continued to be the same here in UAE, my 2022 VW Rline teramont experienced the same cold brake noise and the dealer or VW said that is not an issue and not ready to fix it !

There is nothing to fix. Get on the brakes HARD from 60mph a few times down to 10 one after the other.

Changed my pads today with the recommended ones suggested. Didn't even have to change out the rotors. Everything is perfect now. Would not recommend having stock pads on this vehicle. Thanks for the help.

Great job!
The front brakes on my 2022 Atlas also have made a loud grinding noise throughout the winter. So loud it turns heads in public! I took it to the dealership today. They said they have seen this a lot on 20’-22’ Atlas, but VW is not willing to replace the pads and fix the problem. He actually pointed out another Atlas in the shop with the same issue. I’m going to go have the pads replaced elsewhere and avoid VW in the future.

I'm looking for an answer on that as well as my 22 cross sport rline doing same. I have an appointment tomorrow to get new rotors and pads on the front as that''s where I hear it all the time. Will let you know.
I have the exact same problem with Atlas 2021 model. I took it to dealer a few times and they said there is nothing wrong with it. I am just gonna drive for another three years and will never get VW ever again.
same! Never again

changing the pads worked for about 6 months
I have a 2019 and have had these types of sounds. The first time they put it down to the steering column and repaired it. It’s back but not as loud and only when breaking (before it would happen when turning without breaking). They checked brakes and rotors and tell me that both are good too. So, none the wiser.
I hope I’m not offending anyone here but this is absolutely not normal. it might be normal for a VW Atlas, but not normal for cars in general.

Maybe people aren’t aware of what Atlas owners are talking about. My ‘21 v6 turns heads for the first few miles. Pads have plenty of life, rotors are perfect. The sound these brakes make while cold sounds like metal on metal grinding like there’s no pad left at all.

I’ve heard rusty rotors after rain or a wash, I’ve heard aggressive compounds. I also have a ‘20 passat and get very minor grinding/squeaking which is normal.
