I have towed a u-haul 6x12 trailer with u-haul installed class III hitch, rated for 5000lbs /500lbs tongue weight. I don't think I actually filled the trailer to 5000lbs, but it should be somewhere around 3000lbs. Towing it is relatively easy, 55-70mph cruising with some local driving averaged a 15mpg.

I went to the dealership and they said that VW doesn't officially support towing for the 2.0T models. So I went to u-haul for the hitch and wiring installation.

From pics of a 2.0T AWD manual... i see VW doesn't list a tongue weight cap. But on the 2.0 it lists the unbraked capacity as 1650 lb, and braked is 1980.... same as the 3.6, on a non-5000 lb factory-installed version. overall weight of car with towed object is 6820 lb. with the 2.0t, and 8010 with the 3.6.
For grins, I figured those maxs vs the se awd models' curb weights of 4440 lb. and 4528 to see that the difference is 2380 lb. for the 2.0, and 3718 lb for the 3.6.
