Spy Shots of the 2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport

The 2020 Atlas Cross Sport will launch "later this year" according to recent reports which to my guess means around late Q3 2019.

Expectations are as follows
  • Engines: turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine or 3.6-liter V6
  • Seats: 5
  • Price: TBD
  • Launch: Los Angeles Auto Show
  • Orders: likely to follow its L.A. show debut

The Atlas Cross Sport will be launched later this year and it will be built alongside the standard Atlas in Chattanooga, Tennessee. While the concept used a plug-in hybrid powertrain, the production model is slated to have a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 235 hp (175 kW / 238 PS) and 258 lb-ft (349 Nm) of torque. Fans can also expect a familiar 3.6-liter V6 developing 276 hp (206 kW / 280 PS) and 266 lb-ft (360 Nm) of torque.

The Atlas Cross Sport will be a five-seater and it could measure 190.8 inches (4846 mm) long, 79.9 inches (2029 mm) wide and 68.3 inches (1735 mm) tall with a wheelbase that spans 117.3 inches (2979 mm). This would make the Cross Sport 7.5 inches (191 mm) shorter, 1.6 inches (41 mm) wider and 1.7 inches (43 mm) lower than the standard model.

There’s no word on when the Atlas Cross Sport will be unveiled but, since there’s only one major American auto show left this year, it could be introduced in Los Angeles this fall.

The VW Cross Sport was spotted testing again, this time in Arizona. As some may notice it stays true to the VW Cross GTE concept

Following last month’s spy shots of the VW Atlas Cross Sport sent by one of our readers from Arizona, we can now show you a new set of images, this time courtesy of our photographers.

The two-row variant of the Atlas SUV has been spotted in the U.S. once again but unfortunately, prototypes continue to be fully wrapped in camouflage — only the windshield and the front lateral windows are undisguised.

Despite that, we can see that the midsize SUV has a familiar silhouette, especially if you’re familiar with the VW Teramont X recently unveiled in China. Both the Teramont X and its American counterpart are inspired by the Cross Coupe GTE and the Atlas Cross Sport concepts from 2015 and 2018, respectively.

Compared to said study, the production model gets slightly toned-down front and rear bumpers, as well as simplified light units. However, the sportier proportions stay largely the same. The Atlas Cross Sport isn’t quite identical with the Teramont X, however. The design of the front fascia is different, as is the LED signature of the taillights.

The VW Atlas Cross Sport is expected to retain the regular Atlas’ 117.3-inch (2,984-mm) wheelbase for production costs reasons. However, it is shorter than the three-row model — by about 7.5 inches (190 mm). The Cross Sport is also 1.7 inches (43 mm) lower and 1.6 inches (41 mm) wider for a more dynamic stance. Additionally, distinctive design cues include the more sloping roofline and more steeply-raked rear window. Overall, it looks more athletic than the Atlas, although this particular prototype has ditched the concept’s massive 22-inch wheels for smaller ones.

Under the hood, the VW Atlas Cross Sport will share powertrain choices with the larger Atlas. That shouldn’t be surprising given that the Cross Sport will be built alongside the three-row model at the Chattanooga plant in Tennessee. The standard choice will be a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 235 hp, with a 276 hp 3.6-liter V6 available as an option. There are also rumors of a 310 hp hybrid system but those haven’t been officially confirmed.

The 2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport will go into production later this year and will represent the automaker’s answer to the Chevrolet Blazer, Ford Edge, and other similar models. The public debut is likely to take place at the LA Auto Show in November.

So i've been watching developments on the Atlas Cross Sport closely and now that its fully revealed, I am pleased to say its everything we could ask for!

olkswagen is cashing in on the SUV craze with the new Atlas Cross Sport.

A shortened, five-seat version of the Atlas, VW hopes the Cross-Sport will help capture even more of the SUV market that now makes up more than half of its sales.

The Atlas Cross Sport is 2.8 inches shorter and 2.3 inches lower than the Atlas. Despite that, it maintains the same wheelbase and the same engine options: a 276 hp V6 or a 235 hp turbocharged I4.

“Building off the success of the Atlas seven-seater midsize SUV, we see an opportunity for a five-seater model that offers even more style and almost as much interior space,” said Scott Keogh, CEO, Volkswagen Group of America. “We look forward to entering this growing segment with the Atlas Cross Sport, which offers outstanding Volkswagen technology, driver-assist features, style, and value.”

The biggest change will come to the exterior. A new three-bar chrome grille distinguishes the Cross Sport from the Atlas as well as a new light signature, which extends from the middle bar to give the front end a holistic design. A new hood and a new bumper lend the Cross Sport an air of aggression that should serve it well in the segment.

The coupe-styling will certainly be the biggest appeal of the new Cross Sport’s design. The sloping roofline helps the Atlas variant cut a more dashing figure and, along with the optional 21-inch rims, should make it stand out in a busy segment.

Inside, too, the Cross Sport improves. Along with new stitching accents on the door inserts and seats, a new steering wheel with simplified buttons should also make the Atlas easier to use.

That’ll be important because VW wants this to be a tech showcase. As we’ve discussed previously, the Atlas Cross Sport will be a high tech showcase.

The Cross Sport will come with the ability to display speed limits, school zones, no-passing zones and more.

It will also offer Traffic Jam Assist, which operates between 0-37 mph and can follow the car ahead at a set distance (much like Adaptive Cruise Control). The system’s party trick, though, is that it can come to a full stop and help keep you centered in your lane.

Volkswagen’s updated Car-Net system, meanwhile, allows you to perform many of the key’s functions from your phone, offers a number of security functions, and can give turn your car into a wifi hotspot.

The first of these functions, called Remote Access, is free (for five years). Through a mobile app, you can lock, unlock, honk, start, and check on your car’s status from your phone.

The Safe & Secure package, which offers emergency assistance, anti-theft alerts, stolen vehicle location, and crash notifications, costs $99/year.

Volkswagen will offer you a free month of wifi (via Verizon), but you’ll have to pay after that.

Pricing won’t be available until later, but we do know that there will be eight trim levels: S, SE, SE w/Tech, SE w/Tech R-Line, SEL, SEL R-Line, SEL Premium, and SEL Premium R-Line.

Full pricing will be available closer to the car’s launch in Spring 2020.
