Anyone else have insufficient air conditioning?

I purchased my wife's SEL model last August/September. 26k miles on it now with really no issues other than the air conditioning. We live in NH and with some of these extremely hot days we have not been able to get the car down to cool/comfortable temperatures. We have 3 kids in car seats and even they are complaining it's hot in the car.
We routinely need to have the blower on full blast just to maintain comfort. I know heating/cooling is subjective and dependent on many factors, but comparing this air conditioning to other vehicles in the same conditions, it really comes up short.

Is the air conditioning a known week point in the Atlas? Or perhaps I just have a problem with ours. I have an appointment to get it checked next week, but wanted to get some other opinions before bringing it in.

It should be able to cool down to roughly 30* below ambient air temp. Get a digital thermometer and stick it in the vent with max ac on and see if you're getting that temp (with outside air, recirculate would be cooler)

What are you setting your unit on? I leave mine on auto/sync 100% of the time and let it figure out how to best be efficient w/r to outside vs. recirc etc. - no issues here in VA with 100 deg days. It's a large interior to cool and I have noticed if left outside, it will take a while to really cool down vs. being stored in the garage. I use a sunshade on the windshield and keep the sunroof shade closed if outside. There have been folks that have said their systems were low on refrigerant which would certainly cause insufficient cooling. I would definitely just take it in. Also some noting that the blend door for heat/cool is not functioning correctly so several things that others have noted. Good luck!

I'll try the thermometer idea and see if it can get down 30° below ambient. I'm about 99% sure that it will not cool the inside to 65° on a 95° day.

We put it on 'max AC' and I've tried both recirc and outside air. We do not have a garage so the inside gets got when sitting in the driveway with the windows up of course. I have a 2002 Chevy Venture minivan that can cool the interior better/faster than my 2018 Atlas!

There must be something wrong with it, I'm curious if others have noticed this as well, hopefully not and it's just something that can be fixed. I'd like to put my hand up the vent and feel COLD air, not just cool air. Thanks for the replies so far.

Next time just set it on "auto" and set it at 72 (and "sync") and see how that is vs. "max"...just leave it alone and let it do it's thing. Max just turns the fan to full and the recirc. I believe that max is actually causing some of the issue b/c you are taking air inside the vehicle that is well over 100 and trying to cool it vs. outside air which is going to be in the 90s. Sounds like you have something wrong, but worth playing with while you wait to take it in.

My wife and I were wondering if anyone else had the same issue actually. It doesn't cut it for us. We've had it San Antonio and it spends most of its time in north Alabama. For reference, our Atlas is black, but we have formula one pinnacle tint all the way around, with air80 on the windshield. I do it to all of the vehicles I've owned, and I wouldn't want to imagine a summer in our Atlas without such a strong heat rejecting tint. When we set it to "auto" it sets the fan to "bare minimum blow" at whatever temp we have it set on with an occasional ramp up. It pretty much lives on "MAX AC" or "auto" then me manually cranking the fan to 30-50%. In short, the air in our Atlas doesn't cut it.

Please let me know what your dealer says. I've got VERY bad blood with my VW dealer here in Huntsville and refuse to take mine there.

So auto at what temp setting? If you set it at 72 for instance and set the sync so all zones are set to 72, it will be at min. fan speed if the interior is hot? Ours does what you would expect....at start up and these settings it will blow full tilt until the temp reaches 72 and then back down. In auto, I see the fan speed b/c I set that using OBD11..nice to see what you are getting in terms of the fan speed.

For me, it's auto at about 68 degrees. 72 would burn us out of the car because the fan just doesn't blow. At 68 it mixes cooler air enough to tolerate if we've finally got it chilled down enough from Max. Good question though! I should have specified what temp I maintained auto at.

^^^almost sounds like the system's thermometer sensors aren't working correctly vs. the air being blow isn't cold enough. I did some testing last night with a thermometer in the vents. Auto/sync at 72, ambient at 85, running vehicle for ~10 min parked yielded air out the front registers of ~40 deg, second row ~50 deg, and third row ~60 deg. Have you tested yours? A basic kitchen/meat thermometer is all you need. (mine is digital). Keep in mind (I know folks shoudl know this but just to be sure) that the air out of the vents is whatever temp it is and the setting of the system is just the target for the system to reach so air out of vents at the system set to 60 is the same temp as it is when it's set to 72). Also, you can't be in "auto" and have it on recirc, auto is always outside air (as far as I have seen) so when you hit max or hit recirc it kicks it out of auto mode into manual and the fan will not blow at full speed unless you set it to. The manual says to not use recirc unless you really are trying to avoid outside odors.

Yeah, we figured something wasn't quite right which is why I'm eager to hear if OP gets any traction with his dealer.

In case you're curious, the reason to dissuade folks from using recirc has to do with interior CO2 concentrations. If you ever get a chance to put a portable CO2 monitor in your vehicle, watch the readings of both recirc and normal. Concentrations above 1000ppm begin to impair some cognitive function, typically only related to focused concentration. Concentrations above 2500ppm begin to impair reaction time and further diminish cognitive function. In my Civic on my 30 minute commute with the air set to recirc, I reached 3200ppm!!! Now, I reserve recirc for only when I need maximum cooling.

^^^V. interesting, thanks for the data!/info! I usually use outside air as much as possible in my vehicles and save, like you, recirc for only the times I really need max cooling or I am trying to avoid outside air for odors etc. The thing I don't like about the outside air setting in some cars (my Focus) is that you get higher flow at low fan settings from the "ram-air" effect of the air coming in at highway speeds.

I have an Execline (not sure what the equivalent is). Anyways, when you select the drive type (Eco, Normal, Sport, Custom), if you pick custom and then adjust, there is an option for Climate Control. I set mine to Normal (as opposed to Eco).

Maybe some of you are driving in Eco mode and the Climate Control is set to Eco instead of Normal by default?

Hope this helps

Reviving an old thread it seems - my wife's 2019 Atlas SEL's A/C does not work at all! The system basically blows air at the ambient air temperature. Taking it to the dealer next friday as they won't have a loaner available till then.

Was there ever a definitive issue w/ this? It almost seems as if there is no refrigerant in her car or the compressor isn't working.

We have a 2018 Atlas SEL Premium and had similar issues with the AC. Minor cooling in the front and no cooling in the rear. They topped up the refrigerant and added die. As expected the problem continued. Using the die they found that the "Low Side Service Valve Insert' was leaking - hence the hissing noise and the Rear Evaporator was replaced. This was back in February 2019 and since then no problems.

Insufficient

I've noticed the same thing and it appears the A/C unit is not sufficient for the vehicle and interior space. I can leave it on Max/LO for a LONG time, driving down the highway/interstate, and it still is not cold in the vehicle. The dealer has tested it and just says it's putting out the correct temp and that's all they'll say or do. However, in comparison, I used to have a 2015 Chrysler Town & Country which has as large or larger space to cool and it was able to more than keep up and I could adjust the temp down after a reasonable period of cooling. I was also loaned a prior year Tiguan and that cooled very quickly. It seems like VW reused Tiguan parts for a much larger vehicle. I've also recently noticed when parking in a parking deck for the day and putting the A/C on Max when I start out, the vehicle does cool down faster and I can adjust the level down some. Again, going with the idea the unit is insufficient to cool a hot car down efficiently of that size. Granted I like a cool vehicle, but when comparing to other models, it clearly underperforms.

May I suggest just using the "Auto" setting - just put it in auto, set the temp, and see how that works. Our SEL is more than adequate cooling for all 3 rows and I never move it off auto.

I took my wife's Atlas into the dealership last Friday (5/31/2019) and through troubleshooting, they were able to determine that there was zero refrigerant in her car. They topped off the refrigerant and ran the car w/ AC for what they say was a couple of hours and the system stayed cold. So far, the system is working fine and gets very cold but it's anybody's guess as to what or if any damage was done to the condenser w/o having coolant in it and we're still hoping there isn't a leak somewhere in the system.

Only 1 week old...

I picked my Atlas up Monday night. Think I've driven it all of 40 miles so far. A/C (and seats :wink2:) are doing it's job. Been in the 90's, very very humid and heat index hitting 100+ all week. Again, it's working ok based on how the A/C in my 2011 Town&Country and 09 Jeep perform.

I have 4,800 miles on my 2019 Atlas SE and I am driving my THIRD loaner due to AC issues. No matter what I set it on, I have heat coming out. Not all the time; which is making it very hard to fix. This is so frustrating! The tech told me to keep the recycled air button on at all times to make cold air come out. ??? I live in south Florida.....I cannot have a car without an AC that works.

I have a 2018 Atlas in white. I leased it in February 2018 and I have had it at the dealership every summer since I had it. In 2018 I had it there as the AC was not cool. I had it on high and it was horrible. They couldn't find anything wrong with it. They did the dye test and said they couldn't find a leak so they charged it and gave back to me. It was okay for awhile. I then had to take back in summer of 2019 for the same reason. My husband was almost getting sick when we were driving from the AC not working and how hot it was outside. They had my car for awhile and they said they had to replace a wire, they then charged it again and gave it back to me. Once again I had my car in the shop for the AC about 2 weeks ago. They were also replacing the catalytic converter as this is an open recall. They had my car for over a week and didn't start working on it until the parts for the catalytic converter came in. I was furious as I said I brough it in for the AC and what happens if you need parts for it and it takes days to get it as I am going away down south in 4 days and need my car with working AC. They said parts for AC would come in next day. Well, guess what they said there is a leak but cannot figure out where the leak is coming from. They put the dye in and said it will take awhile for the dye to go through so the service manager will take it home and drive it. I was so furious with the whole thing I contacted the sales manager who called me back and said that he reviewed my records and said it stated that I was told to bring my car back after they put the dye in my car, all 3 times. I said that was never told to me and I was and I am still livid. This is the way of them covering their butts. So after I got off the call with him I get a call from the service manager who said my car was ready and they dye is in there and it could take months for it to show where the leak is. I went off on them and said I would never take my car home if they air wasn't working or you told me to bring it back as it is an inconvenience to me. I got my car back and guess what the AC isn't working right and I am taking it back tomorrow. We didn't take it away with us as we were concerned the air would stop working let alone we were getting limited cool air on the fan on high.

Ours is horrible as well, the dealership claims it’s fine. Seems to me this model just has a shitty ac.

A few things. 1) get a thermometer, like a kitchen/meat one, and stick in the front vent. What does it read? 2) I find using a windshield sunshade helps big time in the summer. 3) close the shade on the sunroof if you have one 4) when you get in and start it up, roll the windows down and put the AC on max to blow the hot air in the cabin out. 5) ceramic window tint helps out immensely. Ours seems to work fine even in the triple digits we are having now. Final comment, check that you are set to "hot countries" using OBDEleven/VCDS:

I am very surprised that VW seems to be ignoring these AC issues with the Atlas model.

We have a 2018 VW Atlas SEL and every year (in the summer, of course) I take it to the dealer because the AC stops working. This happens on longer drives (about one or two hours into our trip). The fan does not work either anymore and the only solution is turning off the AC, suffer for 20 minutes and turn it back on. The dealer claims all is fine and I just need to "up" the temp so that the AC does not work that hard. VW USA supports the dealer's opinion; "Everything works as designed; just set the AC at 70 and not lower" I am furious about this lame response. FYI, we do not use the recirculation-button. Any advice?
